From PCL Reconstruction to Knee Replacement – Complex Case Management
This case highlights the long-term challenges after a PCL (posterior cruciate ligament) reconstruction. The patient presented 12 years later with a stiff, painful knee and post-traumatic osteoarthritis caused by invasive hardware (large screw and spiked washer).
Stage 1 involved safely removing the hardware — a complex step due to the risk of defects left behind — to prepare the knee for a future total knee replacement.
Successful removal was achieved, and the next stage of treatment will restore function and mobility. Shared with patient consent.
