Sealed Agm Battery Is Different From Gel Battery

Through this article, we are comparing two battery types to help you determine which battery suits your needs.

Both are classified as "sealed lead-acid batteries", "AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries" and "gel batteries", and they are often mistaken for the same. Both batteries have similar characteristics, such as the deep cycle capability of the Sealed Deep Cycle Battery, splash-proof design, and can be used in different directions. These two batteries are also known for their low self-discharge, low maintenance, and anti-vibration characteristics. However, AGM and Gel are two completely different batteries.

Through this article, we are comparing two battery types to help you determine which battery suits your needs.

  Similarities

These two batteries are classified as Valve Regulated Lead Acid (VRLA) batteries. The oxygen generated on the positive plate of the lead-acid battery is absorbed by the negative plate. In turn, the negative plate will produce water. This helps to remove heat from the chemical reaction generated by the electrolyte. Therefore, the user does not need to add water to these batteries, and maintenance is not required.

  difference

The Sealed Agm Battery uses a special glass mat made of fine glass fiber. This is designed to absorb the electrolyte between the panels.

On the other hand, gel batteries use a special type of silica gel to hold the electrolyte together. The thickness of the material allows electrons to flow freely from the plate.

  Compare two battery types

Gel batteries tend to consume more power than AGM batteries, especially at lower temperatures. This is due to the gelled thixotropic composition of the battery. AGM batteries can work in extreme weather, so they are very suitable for winter utilities that consume electricity, such as snowmobiles.

When it comes to depth of discharge (DoD), gel batteries use acid better than AGM batteries. Acid protects the plate of the gel battery and enhances its deep discharge application. However, gel batteries must be charged correctly or they will fail prematurely. The scar inside the jelly material will produce small packets and corrode the small packets.

AGM batteries are cheaper than Gel batteries, but they have a longer life and provide greater amperage when needed. These batteries work best in high-power applications such as sports vehicles.

  in conclusion

In terms of durability, long life, and charging, AGM batteries have sold more than gel types. They are also cheaper and can work in different weather conditions.

Compared with AGM batteries, gel batteries have a lower leakage rate due to their gel composition.
